UnLtd South Africa www.unltdsouthafrica.org the charity finds and supports social entrepreneurs in South Africa. At the invitation of the Chair, Heather Brandon, I visited their ‘small but mighty team’ in Cape Town with my former colleague Madeleine Gabriel, now Head of Impact Research and Evaluation at UnLtd UK. We ran an evaluation workshop with Trustees, staff and partners and awardees. We are continuing to support put the ideas into action via e-mail and Skype it was great to see the work of some of the charity’s first awardees up close and to see the challenges that they are overcoming on a daily basis.
We spent a day visiting some of the projects being set up by Charles Nywakura, Founder of Deaf Hands at Work. His enterprise is creating everyday training and work opportunities for people with disabilities, through for example training supervisors and colleagues how to sign.

What has art got to do with it?

Whilst in Cape Town I visited the District Six Museum. Closer to home, I really recommend the exhibition currently showing at the Barbican Everything Was Moving: Photography from the 60s especially Ernest Cole and David Goldblatt’s images of South African life South Africa under apartheid, and Bruce Davidson and William Eggleston’s pictures capturing the struggles for racial justice in the USA.

Sadly these images are all too topical still.
